It is our great pleasure to welcome you to GLS. In this commission, delegates will have the opportunity to take on the role of a world leader, from either the present or the past, in order to solve current affairs. You will present the personal opinions of your leader, rather than represent a government.  We can assure that our topics will help you to understand current issues, and also allow you to solve them in a challenging and enjoyable way. Debates will be dynamic and compelling, as you will have to apply your leader's philosopy to current world problems.

The portfolio is different for GLS.  Leaders are expected to send a total of 4 documents. There should be a short biography of the leader, which will help you understand your leader's way of thinking, details of their leader's life and their ideology. You must also send a position paper, where you must present your investigation for each topic, stating your leader's thoughts on the affairs and the possible solutions they might consider.  Finally, you should have two opening speeches, which will have the same structure as a normal opening speech.

Please feel free to contact us through the commission email if you have any questions.  We look forward to meeting you at CCBMUN XVIII!

Day 1

By: Carolina Agudelo

At the starting point of CCBMUN XVIII in the Summit where global leaders unite to talk about controversial international political and social issues with a rollercoaster of a ride along leaders from all time periods and places around the world. Although things are different this year, the Global Leaders Summit (GLS) went right into debating with powerful people speaking on powerful things out of personal perspectives which is certainly different from other commissions in this model. The first topic for this model and the one discussed today being Is it possible to have a set of Universal Human Rights? People have different perspectives and points to set out on the table. Within the summit a lot was discussed but before that there is key information that is keen to the debate.

GLS.jpg

The Universal Human Rights have their challenges, but most of their outcomes are positive and helpful in many situations. The biggest challenge that the UHR faces is culture and the things that it carries. Empathy is difficult and can only be felt to a certain extent and that brings a particular difficulty in understanding cultures that are not one’s own. The UHR seeks to bring freedom and rights to all human beings but many argue that those same rights are coming in conflict with cultural beliefs which in turn makes them contradictory. With that, the debate started with the discussion of the importance of human rights and then focused on cultural heritage and how it relates to said rights. Relating to culture, Angela Merkel didn’t believe that a universal set of these rights is the most sensible thing to do and she proposed her version of a solution. This being, that rights can be thought out as a team of leaders seeking the good of everyone but that each country establishes their own set of rights accommodated to their own set of cultures respecting their people’s beliefs.

Within this debate there are many alliances between leaders, the first being Queen Elizabeth I and Nelson Mandela who seek the continuity of the UHR. On the other hand there is Angela Merkel, Kim Jong Un, and Cyrus the Great who believe that there should be individual sets of rights adapted to each country’s needs. During one of the debates President Maria Jose Salgado brought an interesting new leader along for the ride. By bringing Adolf Hitler into the conversation the debate got heated, when stating points he praised Kim Jong Un for his nation and his thinking but failed to forget to say that his opinion is the one that should matter most and only blue-eyed people should have rights which left everyone shocked. Nelson Mandela responded to him by saying that his regime failed for a reason.

The debate continues and although leaders seek to find a solution they have to find a way to join forces to make something out of this and figure out what to do next. Over the next few days, the model continues and another topic awaits. Will the Universal Human Rights remain the same or will the change be for the better or worse? That’s a matter left to be resolved.

Day 2

Today in GLS: Is the United Nations Actually Pointless?

By: Carolina Agudelo

The model’s second day reaches the Global Leaders Summit where a resolution has been drafted for their first topic seeking to answer the question: is it possible to have a single set of Universal Human Rights? That’s not everything they did today, they also started the discussions regarding their second topic which seeks to answer the question: can the United Nations ever truly be effective?

Thanks to yesterday’s heavy debating and countless interventions done by the commission’s delegates, today they have come together and decided on a solution to the first matter at hand which ended up being that every nation decides their independent set of human rights and can seek assistance from a general assembly to then filter their options and decide on their final set of Human and Cultural Rights. In regards to the effectiveness of the United Nations the leaders in the commission debated on whether or not to keep the United Nations. From the beginning each leader’s position in regards to this matter was clear. Kim Jong Un and Cyrus the Great are against the United Nations while Queen Elizabeth I, Nelson Mandela, and Angela Merkel are in favor.

As the debate went on two guests came along for the debate, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin each with their own points of view. Mr. Trump argued that the United Nations has heavily contributed to the distribution of fake news and fake consensus regarding climate change which was in turn affecting the oil industry, the industry which greatly contributes to the US economy. Mr. Trump also claimed to only host the UN in the United States because it provided him with economic revenue. On the other hand, Vladimir Putin believes that the UN is a helpful institution because it helps with the communication between nations being able to talk and discuss matters face to face. Kim Jong Un claimed that some of the UN’s actions affect the nation's sovereignty and power.

With another day before the leaders they are left to continue their debates and discussions to come up with a solution to the matter at hand and decide whether or not to maintain the United Nations or eradicate it completely.

Day 3

Today in GLS: The UN’s Flaws and How They are Going to Get Fixed

By: Carolina Agudelo

Reaching the end of this year’s virtual model, the Global Leaders Summit is also reaching a conclusion to their second topic that seeks to answer the question: can the United Nations ever be truly effective? For the past two days the leaders and presidents in the commission have been tirelessly working towards answering two questions, one of which was resolved yesterday. And after countless interventions and discussions, the leaders have finally come to an agreement to answer the question at hand.

But before coming into said agreement on what was the best solution to the question, the summit discussed the matter in a series of debates. In these, many points and arguments were made before then coming together in a conclusion in order to then draft an adequate solution. Kim Jong Un is in favor of modifying the United Nations and changing its role since it has no power and is dysfunctional which results in a waste of money and time but considers internal affairs to be exceptionally important. Nelson Mandela claims that it does work and the flaws within it are due to the society surrounding it. Queen Elizabeth I agrees with Kim Jong Un in the fact that international relations are important but disagrees with his claims of dysfunctionality of the UN as a whole. Angela Merkel believes that the UN does work and has an important role in the global community, but accepts the fact that there are some issues within it that can be solved.

After much debating, a solution was drafted that concluded that the United Nations would work long term, but in order for that to truly happen some modifications had to be made. It sought to revise the effectiveness of commissions to see if they are truly a waste of budget and assure equality within itself as well as increasing worldwide education to bring awareness of situations to the people. This education seeks to promote the election of leaders to be done wisely in order to respect all nations’ sovereignty. And to close the final day of the model in GLS this solution will be implemented until it is challenged, therefore until further notice. That brings the CCBMUN XVIII to an end in the GLS commission, and despite the model going online, the presidents and leaders made sure that this experience was outstanding and gratifying.

Simulation Day

Determination of an adequate political, economic and social system for the societies of the future

By:  Santiago Montoya

The Global Leader Summit it's a really unique commission from the other ones. This is because GLS is composed of global leaders, not delegates representing countries as in the conventional commissions of any Model United Nations. This is the main difference that the GLS Committee is going to have compared with other commissions, and that is what makes it special .Each leader will understand the current situation, and will be able to use all the technical language that we use today.

GLS.jpg

The first topic of this commission is  the Determination of an adequate political, economic and social system for the societies of the future. The day started with diverse points of view that makes leaders argue between them. One of the most outstanding  leaders was Martin Luther King, who commented a solution for the problematic of oppression and inequality. Other perspective that really made contradictions in the commission was Karl Marx, who proposed a solution based on blood and iron. On the other hand, Leona Vicario mentioned that the implementation of the fear to god while make individual gain respect from others. The commission didn’t agree on a solution.

Day 1

What can justify foreign intervention?

By:  Camila Nahuel

Today's debate centres around foreign intervention. This is a topic that deals with the justification of governments or organizations to intervene in the activities of other countries. It comes in different ways, there is economic, humanitarian, political and military interventions. Because it is a Some delegates, like Gandhi argue that there is no moral justification for this action. Other only believe in humanitarian interventions.

In the debate, the leaders mostly point out successful or failed attempts at intervention throughout history. They express their stands regarding this topic and disvalidate claims of others by arguing that they have no concrete base for this. Furthermore, there were some heated clashes during the debate between leaders. President Donald Trump and Senator Bernie Sanders, even being from the same country, dispute on their incoherences of their expressed opinions. Moreover, Benito Mussolini and Napoleon have attacked Gandhi on multiple occasions. Mussolini believes that deciding or not to intervene comes down to science. The leader says that “some people are better than other. Because of this, our job is to intervene if your race isn’t fit to rule. Simple science”. The leader Gandhi, out of character responded very angrily by questioning what science could prove their superiority and stating that “we don’t have a leader [in the commission], we have a clown”. Other leaders attack the position of those that completely support intervention saying that they feel like God and that they should be more focused on their own countries because their actions can threaten the system.

They haven’t reached a conclusion but the crisis that is being set up by the presidents will lead the commision to firmly decide whether or not they can justify foreign intervention.

Day 3

Would surveillance have a positive or negative effect on the individual?

By:  Camila Nahuel

With MUN day two being canceled, the global leader’s summit decided to continue with their second topic: Determinism vs. free will regarding individuals’ privacy. The main issue that this topic addresses is of it is morally correct to surveil their citizens for their own security or if each person should have the liberty to act as they see fit. This topic also questions whether an individual should have be able to freely chose their identity without the interference of the government, or if the government should impose and determine its citizens’ identity and beliefs.

The leaders took sides from the beginning and attacked each other by remembering the acts that they have taken that show either wrongful implementation of the surveillance or an occasion where supervision from the government could have saved lives. The leaders Bernie Sanders stood up for his belief that in a democratic government every individual had the right to privacy. On the other hand, leaders like Queen Elizabeth and Donald Trump argued that surveillance should exist because terrorist hide among their citizen. Finally, Mussolini and Kim Jong would not let society fall to disorder and see that setting limits for their citizens as a solution because, as politicians, they know what’s best for them.

A crisis presented in the last moments of the debate. A member of al-Qaida was caught due to the implementation of surveillance before any terrorist acts could occur. During the crisis, the terrorist approached Osama and declared his loyalty to him. After the leader claimed that if this follower was considered a terrorist, then everyone should too because they also have committed what is defined as terrorist acts. Because of this, the commission made a motion to remove Osama bin Laden from the commission and he had to leave the commission. Now the commission looks to finalize the debate and offer their resolution papers with contrasting opinions.
